Disney donates money from Cinderella's Wishing Well to foster children organization

Posted on 18:37 by the great khali
A Dis
Cinderella’s Wishing Well at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World is a place for many to make wishes by throwing in change.

Now, Disney has taken that change, totaling $15,000, and donated it to the Foundation for Foster Children. The non-profit helps children living with foster families realize some of their own wishes such as access to summer camps, art classes, social activities, tutoring and even cakes on special occasions, according to a Disney news release.

For more than 30 years, Disney World has donated the money from the wishing wells, fountains and water-based attractions to children’s charities. This year, the cast members voted to give the money to the Foundation for Foster Children.

“One of our goals is to increase public awareness and support for more than 1,400 foster children who live in Central Florida,” said Betsey Bell, executive director of the Foundation for Foster Children, in a news release.

“Each coin is a symbol of hope and dreams,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations at Walt Disney World Resort.

In front of Cinderella’s Wishing Well, a plaque reminds guests their wishes will help the dreams of children come true.

Disney-Pixar holds 'Monsters University' fundraiser for JDRF

Posted on 20:34 by the great khali
"Monsters University" is expected to make at least $70 million at the box office in its debut weekend, but we have an even more impressive number to share:

$1.65 million.

That's how much a Pixar preview screening of the movie raised for JDRF, the leading organization dedicated to funding research into treating and ultimately curing Type 1 diabetes.

The gala preview took place last weekend on Pixar's campus in Emeryville, Ca. -- already one of the coolest places on the planet even before it was decked out like Monsters U, complete with marching band, cheerleaders and beer pong tables (minus the beer).

About 400 party-goers, many in black tie, had the rare opportunity to tour the campus. The party started with college-themed food and drinks and a silent auction and continued with a sit-down dinner and live auction. Among the items available at auction: original Pixar artwork, a collection of Pixar Hawaiian shirts and a dinner for eight with John and Nancy Lasseter at their Sonoma winery.

And then there was the preview of the movie in the newly christened Steve Jobs Building. The theater comes with a bit of ambiance: As the lights go down, crickets begin to chirp and the stars come out.

"Monsters University" was the 7th movie Pixar has previewed to benefit JDRF. The cause is near and dear to the hearts of both the Lasseters and John Ratzenberger, the actor who has lent his voice to every Pixar movie. Both have grown children who live with Type 1 diabetes.

JDRF spends 85 percent of the money is raises on research into treatments and, ultimately, a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Inspired to help? Make a tax-deductible donate to JDRF anytime.

Kameleon jewelry for Disney introduced

Posted on 18:16 by the great khali
Is your Pandora bracelet full? Disney might have just the thing for you: A line of interchangeable sterling silver jewelry from Kameleon was introduced this month.

Think of Kameleon as a mix-and-match wardrobe of jewelry. Wearing red today? Pop a red insert -- called a "JewelPop," naturally -- into your Kameleon ring or necklace. Change your mind and you can change the insert just by gently pushing it out of the setting and popping in a replacement. (Bracelets, earrings and pins also are available.)

The Disney launch includes one Mickey Mouse necklace and 10 different inserts. The necklace sells for $125, while the pops go for $50 or $60 each -- a bit more than non-Disney items from Kameleon.

The Disney JewelPops will fit any Kameleon product, so folks who already have a collection started may be most tickled by this development.

According to JewelPop, Disney themes have been the most requested designs since the company launched the Kameleon line. The jewelry company said it went through a "lengthy licensing and design process" with Disney, and the additional designs may be added later depending on demand and popularity.

The line is available at Disney parks and through the Disney Store online (search for "jewel pop").

Update: If you can't make it to Disney World to purchase Disney pops, you can purchase them online here at the Disney Store.

The former Hollywood estate owned by Walt Disney is up for sale for a cool $90 million, according to Forbes.

The Carolwood Drive property was purchased in 1949 and Walt soon built a barn to house a control room for a train. Outisde the half-mile track also included an overpasses, a 46-foot-long trestle and an s-shaped subterranean tunnel hidden.

The property was sold in 1998 to head of the  private investment firm Brener International Group,  Gabriel Brener, soon after Lillian Disney's death. He tore down the building and and rebuilt the mansion.

Some of the artifacts still stand, according to Forbes, including "the 90-foot underground tunnel remains, tucked discreetly among coiffed landscaping. Its entrance is marked by an ivy-covered miniature stone archway with the date “1950″ — the year the railroad began operating — etched on it."
