The Magic Kingdom at Disney World remained the theme park with the highest attendance in the world in 2012 with Asian theme parks increasing at the largest percentage, according to 2012 Theme Park Index.
Disney attractions around the world also saw an increase in attendance by 4.7 percent from 121.8 million people to 126.4 million people. Disney parks rank are the top 8 in the world.
The Tokyo theme parks which suffered a huge decrease after 2011 tsunami saw great gains by 8.5 percent. Hong Kong Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan were up 14 percent. Lotte World in South Korea also saw huge growth.
The report states that Asian theme park attendance could overtake North America with the opening of Shanghai Disney in 2015. "It’s reasonable to expect something in the neighborhood of 10 million attendance in its first year. It will be the largest theme park development in China to date and can be expected to put Asia within striking distance of surpassing North American theme park attendance totals," according to the report, published by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and the Economics practice at AECOM.
